About the Author
Mack (1960, the Netherlands) is a graphic designer and illustrator from The Netherlands. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. During his education he made funny and educational cartoons about, among others, penguins and whales. These cartoons were later bought by the 'Diergaarde Blijdorp'-zoo in Rotterdam. By now Mack is a regular illustrator at this animal park and he is the author of several children's books, in which animals often are the lead characters. Mack has a primitive way of drawing. He gets inspired by African art and the paintings of the Australian aboriginals. Both create an immense power by simplifying shapes. Mack wants to combine that powerful simplification with a subtle sense of humour. "In my books I try to teach children something in a funny way," Mack says. "If I draw a penguin, it doesn't matter to me that much how pretty he is or how good of an swimmer he is. What I want to show the most is how baggy he stands on the ice and how funny his walk is. That funny bagginess is what I try to catch in a couple of lines. Only when children can laugh about it, I think to myself: 'Yes, I did it'."
Reviews
"From the moment I saw this small format picture book, I loved it. Baby cartoon animals get themselves into a variety of minor scrapes. A goat is stuck on a mountain and a giraffe slips in a muddy puddle, but they all get up again in the final pages. The illustration is appropriately simple and wobbly, managing to make small failures both a source of comedy and an opportunity to learn that recovery comes easily after a little oops. For ages 2 and up." - Publishers Weekly "It is a cute little book for kids. Cute little animals start on a journey to play and explore. Then they slip and fall, although in a harmless way. Type of fall after which you laugh for a long time. It is a funny picture book for kids." - Bookvenger "Loved this concept. This would be such a fun book to read with little kids. As a preschool teacher, I can just picture the children getting excited every time to say "oops." The illustrations were really fun as well! The giraffe was my favorite animal. I can just see so many ways to teach with this book. Great job!" - Molly Christie "I'm just so in love with this little book. I'm in my late twenties and I really had to control myself not to go to the last pages to find out what message the book was going after. I loved the childlike anticipation I felt through the whole book and the way it made me smile and laugh. It's a gem. I can totally see myself with my godchildren, reading the book to them, making them laugh and helping them with the message. I can imagine that it is easy to involve the book in daily life, making hilarious OOps noises with the kids, if something didn't happen quite as expected." - Vi A
