In the past decade, the number of students enrolled in private school choice programs has grown ten-fold. But granting students access to public financing for their private education has not led to the vibrant marketplace of school options many of its supporters envisioned. Michael Q. McShane is a research fellow in education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. A prolific writer and commentator he co-edited Common Core Meets Education Reform and Teacher Quality 2.0. He began his career as an inner city Catholic school teacher in Montgomery, Alabama.
