The book documents the surviving vernacular mosques of Cochin -- a jewel of the trading culture of the Malabar Coast of Kerala, and where historic patterns of an urban trading culture remain visible in the buildings and layout of the city. Sited in compounds replete with coconut palms, the mosques offer an oasis of tranquillity in densely populated neighbourhoods. Large wood-framed pyramidal roofs, deep overhangs, and fine wooden craftsmanship distinguish the Kerala vernacular.
