Description
In 2014, at least two major events have already been scheduled to commemorate the 50th anniversary of "Freedom Summer," one in Mississippi in June and the other at Miami University in the fall. We will be at both events marketing the book, and do special marketing to Mississippi and Ohio bookstores in advance. A documentary made by the same company that produced "The Freedom Riders" for HBO will be releasing a parallel documentary on "Freedom Summer" during the year. We have served as consultants on the documentary and will coordinate bookstore and online marketing with the airing of the documentary. The market for course-use has remained steady, and we'll continue to market it to the academic market. We will have a special sales campaign to all the major civil-rights museums this year, some of which already carry the earlier edition of the Letters from Mississippi. Increased interest in voting-rights issues in the U. S. also give the book a new pertinence. This will be an angle for feature coverage for our media campaign to major newspaper and broadcast outlets. The earlier edition got a story on NPR. We will re-pitch this edition to them, with some volunteers as interviewees. RTIR ad: we have volunteers around the country who can be interviewed. Targeted review/feature campaign to The Nation, Mother Jones, In These Times, Utne Reader, The Progessive, The Forward, and on-line. Targeted mailings and promotion to the Civil Rights Movement Veterans; COFO Civil Rights Education Center; University of Southern Mississippi, and list-serve of SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee). We are working on organizing an anniversary event in Boston in spring 2014, bringing together several Mississippi volunteers from the book, including Rep. Barney Frank, and other civil rights organizations.
