About the Author
Carolyn S. Vagts is a wife, mother, grandmother, quilt designer and the new editor of Quilter's World. She also has a successful quilt shop in Canterbury Village in Lake Orion, Mich. Carolyn has made a name for herself in the quilting world with her award-winning techniques of mixing tradition piecing with fusible-art applique. Carolyn's designs have been published regularly in several magazines, including Quilters World. She also lectures and teaches workshops to guilds.

The whole point of this book is it teaches you to create Mug Rugs. You chose the background and you put together your mug rug how you want it. The book takes you through everything you need to know from the start. I think it's brilliant that the idea is you use the information to create your own mug rug. Once you have followed the steps through the book you will be able to create your own designs. The photo gallery gives you an amazing array of designs you can make from everything that is held with the book. There are fantastic diagrams and pictures
throughout the book, as well as step-by-step instructions. If you want to learn to make mug rugs then this book is an amazing buy.
Don't put your coffee mug down on the table and make a ring - use a mug rug! With room for a cookie or two and a range of seasonal images to choose from, these make great gifts. This is a good excuse to make more than one of these bright, beautiful mats, which is a great project for a fairly new quilter to tackle. You don't need much fabric for the base, and it is a great opportunity to use up scraps for the motifs. The Before You Start section lists what you need, which is mostly basic quilting materials and tools. Before you choose what you are going to put on your mug rug there are eight border and background sets to choose from, all with instructions combining words with diagrams and some staged photographs. At the back is a gallery showing all the mats with their chosen borders (but you can mix and match), as well as instructions on applique, embellishing with embroidery and paint etc. Finally, there are two ideas for items to match your new mug rugs: a runner and a place mat with patterns for both. Finally, there are instructions on quilting, which are aimed more at the improver who is a bit rusty than a total beginner, but then this book does not purport to be for people who have not done any quilting before. There is a pullout sheet of all the patterns at the back, over 25 different images from holiday favorites like a snowman or tree, Halloween pumpkin or witch's boot with web, through to animals such as crab, owl, giraffe, porcupine and dragonfly. My own favorite has to be the seahorses on their elegant runner, but whatever you choose, this is a beautifully presented book of fun and easy projects.
