Description

Bama is one of the most readily recognizable names in the pantheon of Tamil Dalit writers. She rose to fame with her autobiographical novel Karukku (1992), which chronicles the joys and sorrows experienced by Dalit Christian women in Tamil Nadu. Her works have been appreciated for embodying Dalit feminism and celebrating the inner strength of the subaltern woman. This work is a collection of her 15 short stories, selected to showcase the range of social concerns and the depth of her perception of human frailties. In each of these stories, Bama documents the emerging influences on the lives and consciousness of people. She picks up a character one is likely to meet every day and builds a narrative that reveals, with a touch of ironic humour, the internalized caste and patriarchal sentiments that the society passes on to the future generation every single day.

About the Author
Bama is a Dalit writer. Fighting impossible odds she went through school and college and trained as a teacher who imparts values aimed at building self-esteem, and social consciousness. Besides 'Karukku' (1992), her first novel, she has written 'Sangati' (1994), 'Kisumbukkaran' (1996), 'Vanmam' (2002), 'Oru Thathavum Erumayum' (2004), 'Kondattam' (2009), and 'Manushi' (2011) in Tamil. Both novels and through her several short stories and articles she hopes to focus on themes related to caste domination and social discrimination. Her works have been translated into English, French, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. Malini Seshadri is a freelance writer, editor, and translator based in Chennai. She has more than three decades of experience writing newspaper columns and magazine articles on a wide variety of themes. Recently she has co-authored a series of value education books for schools titled 'Living in Harmony', published by OUP. She has translated Bama's Tamil novel 'Vanmam: Vendetta' (OUP 2008). She has written a work of fiction for children and co-edited a textbook for an undergraduate programme.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
