This book describes the flow fields generated by the mixing of exit flows with surrounding and free stream air and their effects on the aircraft and the surrounding environment.These flows have differing effects depending on the aircraft configuration and if the aircraft is in hover or transitional flight. The aerodynamic/propulsion interactions affect the total lift, drag, and pitching moments, effectiveness of jet reaction control jets; ground effects; thrust loss, landing surface damage, and effects on the operational environment. Each of these issues is fully presented, illustrated, and discussed in detail. In addition, a chapter is devoted to present and future efforts in V/STOL research and how it relates to developing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods for analyzing and estimating the flow fields around these aircraft and their effects. Each of the book's chapters includes an extensive list of references from which the material in that chapter is derived.

About the Author
Richard E. Kuhn, a graduate of Parks Air College, began his career at the NACA Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in 1943. His first work in V/STOL included studies on the effectiveness of flap systems in deflecting propeller slipstreams. In 1962, he headed Langley Research Center's Powered Lift Aerodynamics Section and guided the development of the Langley V/STOL Tunnel. He was co-recipient of the SAE Wright Brothers Award for best paper of the year in 1964. During the 1960's and early 1970's, he served as consultant to the U.S. Air Force, NATO, U.S. Department of Transportation and DARPA on various projects and by 1974 was responsible for much of the subsonic and transonic aerodynamic research at Langley. In 1978, he retired from NASA to take a more active role in V/STOL as a consultant and contractor to industry and the government. He has written or co-authored over 100 technical papers - most of them in V/STOL - and half of them since his retirement from NASA. Mr. Kuhn is an AIAA Associate Fellow and a member of the AIAA V/STOL Committee. He received the AIAA's F.E. Newbold V/STOL Award in 2000. Richard J. Margason received his Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. In 1962, following a stint in the U.S. Army, he began work at NASA's Langley Research Center Powered Lift Aerodynamics Section where he conducted experimental research in STOL, V/STOL and powered-lift aerodynamics - rising to Section Head in 1970. During the 1970's and 1980's, he assumed management responsibilities as Head of the Low-Speed Aerodynamics Branch and Head of the Analytical Methods Branch at Langley. In 1986, he served as the Chief of the Fixed-Wing Aerodynamics Branch at Ames Research Center. Dr. Margason also taught aerodynamics classes at George Washington University and San Jose State University during this time. In 1996, he retired from NASA to support the Joint Strike STOVL Fighter Project as a consultant and as a contractor to industry and government on several other projects. He has written or co-authored over 60 technical papers - most in the V/STOL area. Dr. Margason is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA. Peter Curtis received his degree in engineering from Queen Mary College, London University in 1984 and joined British Aerospace where he worked for the Propulsion Integration Section. He was involved in inlet design for supersonic V/STOL concepts, specifically the problems of hot gas ingestion. During the 1980's, he was involved with all aspects of V/STOL propulsion

Found a hard to get book…
