They died in their millions, shattered by German shells and tanks, freezing behind the wire of prison camps, driven forward in suicidal charges by the secret police. Catherine Merridale is an award-winning writer and historian. She is the author of several books, including Ivan's War and Night of Stone, described by Misha Glenny as 'an epic and moving history' and by Anthony Beevor as 'an original and intriguing study of death in Russia'. Her most recent book, Red Fortress: The Secret Heart of Russia's History, won the Wolfson History Prize in 2014. She is Professor of History at Queen Mary College, London.
