Born into poverty in rural Morocco, he overcame immense adversity, teaching himself to read and write classical Arabic at age twenty. Choukri's oeuvre is renowned for its unflinching portrayal of marginalised lives, shining a light on people and spaces ignored by Moroccan society. His vivid storytelling, rooted in the streets of Tangier, serves as both a literary protest and a celebration of resilience.
