In 2017 the English Lake District was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO as a "cultural landscape" of global significance; a landscape gifted by Nature and modified by the activities of humankind to create a very distinctive and special place.

About the Author
After university Guy Richardson pursued a career in town planning and retired as Head of Planning, Cumbria County Council in 1999. He became part-time Chief Officer of the association of Parish Councils in Cumbria and in that capacity was a member of the Lake District National Park Partnership for a number of years. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
An active mountaineer and sailor in the Lake District, UK and abroad over several decades, Guy has been a resident of the Lake District for over 30 years and now lives in Grange over Sands.
