Description

Sailing in cold waters is challenging, but hugely rewarding. And when you venture into the high latitudes you find yourself in some of the world's last real wildernesses. In recent years climate change has made these regions more accessible to small boats, and it is now possible to venture further afield in search of adventure. With practical advice, stunning photography and first-hand accounts of voyages from world-renowned experts, this book offers hard-won wisdom on all aspects of sailing in cold waters: * Preparing yourself: good routines, assessing risk and preparing your crew * Preparing your boat: design, heating, engine, steering, anchors and electrics * Sailing in ice: instrumentation, charts, and what to do when you get stuck * Safety: MOB, polar bears, glaciers and dinghy procedure * Communication: VHF, satellite and SSB * Weather: interpreting GRIB files and reading ice charts * Anchoring and mooring: types and numbers of anchors and mooring lines * Clothes: hiking and skiwear; the three-layer principle * Cruising areas: Svalbard, Antarctica, South Georgia and many more Whether it's tackling the North-West Passage aboard your own yacht or a more modest voyage, heading to Antarctica or keeping your boat in the water for the quieter and often more beautiful winter season, this book is essential reading for all sailors preparing for enjoyable and safe sailing in cold waters.

Advice and wisdom from the world experts in high latitude sailing, invaluable for anyone planning or dreaming of a voyage in cold waters.

Bob Shepton is a double Tilman Award Winner, YJA Yachtsman of the Year 2013, Cruising Club of America's Blue Water Medal winner, and one of the most experienced Arctic sailors in the world. His autobiography Addicted to Adventure is published by Bloomsbury.

Reviews
"Some of us think the more you have to wear the greater the adventure." Jon Amtrup advises on preparing yourself, your boat, equipment, safety. Bob Shepton's photos make one gasp with their grandeur and austere beauty. An informative and beautiful book. * Yachting Monthly *
Utterly factual, devoid of unnecessary fluff and simply meant to in form, not cajole or strike fear into the heart of a sailor who yearns for adventure sailing. The combination makes for an inspirational read that is sure to become a dog-eared companion for any sailor ready to head to high latitudes. * Sailing magazine (US) *
A great addition for anyone preparing to voyage into the higher latitudes... What stands out head and shoulders above the narrative are the super and inspiring photos. So, as well as being good reading material for those preparing to go to the far north or south for the first time, it's also very interesting for those who've already been there and done it - as well as for those who prefer to travel vicariously... It is particularly good at raising awareness of the key issues when venturing to these dramatically beautiful and awe-inspiring regions. * Flying Fish *
This book is an inspiring read and extremely interesting even if you are simply dreaming of heading to the great polar wastelands rather. If you are actually planning on going there, then this guide is absolutely invaluable. * Sailing Today *
Chock-full of practical tips alongside breathtaking images from the author's travels...you'll feel as though you've travelled beyond your living room and into these beautiful icy landscapes. * RNLI magazine *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
