While many gladiators met a grisly end, some survived to achieve celebrity and make huge fortunes. About the Author
Francois Gilbert is an associate researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, studying Roman militaria. Founder of one of the first re-enactment groups in France (Pax Augusta), he was able to study, reconstruct and experiment with their equipment and combat techniques. Giuseppe Rava, a leading military history illustrator, is inspired by the works of the great military artists, such as Detaille, Meissonier, Roechling, Lady Butler, Ottenfeld and Angus McBride.
