About the Author
An experienced IT, networking and electronics engineer, Matt Cook has been interested in cars from a young age, but one particular model has always had a special place in his heart - the Mustang. After several years of owning and restoring British cars such as Mini's and MGBs, Matt took the plunge and spent his savings on importing a 1968 Mustang Fastback. Unfortunately, the car that arrived required hundreds of hours of work and thousands of pounds to get it in order. Undeterred, Matt took on the challenge and fully restored the car. The majority of the work was carried out by Matt himself, including the rebuild of the car's small-block V8 engine. Several years and several cars later (although he still retains his first Mustang), Matt is a well known and active member of the local club and show scene, and regularly helps and advises other Mustang Owners Club members with their issues. Matt has written several articles for club magazines and websites. This was his first book, and he has since written another Buyer's Guide for the Ford Mustang 5th generation/S197, also published by Veloce.
Reviews
Even if you think you know what you're looking for when considering an early Mustang, this handy, inexpensive book is a smart tool to have on hand. Hemmings Classic Car. I wish I had known about this pocket-sized guide when I was last buying a Mustang, as it would have provided me with more useful background on what to look for. If nothing else, it would have offered peace of mind, in an increasingly convoluted market. Luckily I bought a good one! Veloce's guide first asks: is a Mustang right for you? It provides an insight into running and relative costs, what the cars are like to drive and own, what equipment you should prepare before you view advertised examples, the key points to look for, what paperwork they should have, the pros and cons of buying a restoration project over a more expensive restored example and the likely problems you could encounter with paint, bodywork and mechanical issues. There's a list of Mustang-related clubs and some essential specifications to help you confirm the car's identity. It's a lot of information in just 64 pages. - Classic American.
