This book presents current and emerging approaches related with fault diagnosis and failure prognosis applied to electrical machines and drives. It first covers the background: physics of failure, the motor and drive designs and components that affect failure and signals, signal processing and analysis. Then it discusses the features of these signals, and methods to extract these features that can be used for diagnosis of the health of a motor and drive; the methods to identify the state of health and differentiate between the possible faults and their severity and how the accuracy and confidence of these decisions are assessed. The book describes the tools used for the recognition of trends towards failure and the estimation of remaining useful life. The last chapter addresses the relation of fault diagnosis and failure prognosis to possible fault mitigation, the effect on total component and system reliability, and the costs of continuing operation, maintenance and failure.
