This framework guides FAO in carrying out its work on migration at global, regional and country levels, and aims to ensure greater coordination between technical units and decentralized offices, as well as to strengthen coherence and synergies across the Organization. It presents FAO's definition, vision and mission concerning migration and spells out the rationale for engagement in this area. FAO's approach to migration is informed by three guiding principles. The first is inclusiveness, to ensure that the needs of vulnerable, disadvantaged or marginalized groups are addressed in any interventions, and that attention is paid to gender, age and cultural dimensions. The second is sustainability, to ensure that policies, programmes and investments take into account environmental, social and economic considerations. The third is managing complexity, to ensure that a whole-of-government approach is adopted and broad multi-stakeholder partnerships are mobilized. Through this framework, FAO is renewing its commitment to seeking durable solutions and recognizing the potential of migration for agricultural and rural development.
