Description

In recent years, college and university faculty members have witnessed a marked change in institutional climate. Competition has replaced collegiality. Criticism of faculty from outside the university has increased in both volume and intensity. The litigious larger society has arrived on campus with a vengeance. In this ground-breaking volume, Robert Blackburn and Janet Lawrence respond to these developments by showing how faculty and administrators can benefit from learning how to make motivation, expectation, and satisfaction function in concert when faculty are at work. With the ultimate goal of helping faculty and administrators make effective and positive decisions, Blackburn and Lawrence explain and predict faculty behavior in three key areas: research, teaching, and service and scholarship. The authors use what they have learned as a springboard for speculating on the future of faculty work.

About the Author
Robert T. Blackburn was a professor of higher education at the Center for Higher Education, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Janet H. Lawrence is an associate professor at the Center for Higher Education, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Reviews
This book draws together empirical evidence on college and university faculty at work; develops and tests a theoretical framework of faculty motivation to engage in different teaching, research, and service activities; and suggests how administrative practices can be improved so that faculty work lives are enriched and institutions become more productive organizations. Resources in Education The insight into how faculty and administrators view faculty work makes a major contribution to an understanding of both groups and will help each other more fully understand what the other does. The authors describe in fascinating detail how individual and institutional factors interact to foster different types of environment. Choice

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
