If not the profoundest of Greek tragedies, Orestes is certainly one of the most exuberant and entertaining. Euripides stands traditional legend on its head to forge a melodrama full of varied action, emotion, and novel theatrical effects, with a succession of crises crowned by a spectacular happy ending. Produced in 408 B.C., the play marks the culmination of Euripides' development, and in antiquity it surpassed all other tragedies in popularity. No study of Greek drama should neglect it. About the Author
The late M. L. West was Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy. A distinguished classical scholar, his many publications include The East Face of Helicon: West Asiatic Elements in Greek Poetry and Myth (Oxford University Press, 1997), Indo-European Poetry and Myth (OUP, 2007), as well as editions of the Greek tragedian Aeschylus, the Iliad, and the Greek iambic and elegiac poets.
