He was previously Interim Dean in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Head of the Department of Biological Sciences. He has a PhD in Ornithology from Edinburgh University, UK and is the editor of Ringing and Migration, a journal of the British Trust for Ornithology. He is an active and enthusiastic birder and bird ringer/bander.
