Provides you with the required knowledge and skills development around special educational needs and disability (SEND) as you progress through your early teaching career. Using an audit tool, the text builds on any previous training enabling you to ground and embed your practice for children and young people presenting with SEND. It recognises the increasing challenges you may face and distils the theoretical into usable techniques in the classroom. Critical but also practical, the text guides you through research-based concepts and reflective tasks central to understanding and supporting issues around SEND.
About the Author
Anita Devi is a former SENCO, senior leader, school improvement advisor and local authority SEND advisory teacher. She has a wealth of experience in developing leaders of learning, and her own teaching career spans early years to postgraduate education both in the UK and overseas. In 2017 she was awarded the prestigious international Influential Educational Leaders Award for her contribution to the SEND workforce pipeline strategy which supports the development of professionals from initial teacher training to advanced and experienced SENCOs.
Emma Hollis' passion is teacher education. After gaining a first class degree in psychology and training as a primary teacher, she became head of initial teacher education for a SCITT provider. She sees teacher education as a continuum and, whilst her heart will always be very close to the initial stages of a teacher's development, she is also dedicated to ensuring teachers are given access to high quality professional development throughout their careers. Emma took up the role of Executive Director Designate of NASBTT in April 2017 and has been in the post of Executive Director since September 2017.
Reviews
"This book is written for a practitioner by a practitioner so it is very useful as an immediate reference book and to get quick answers that can be explored in school thus ensuring high quality support for students. I now have a battered much thumbed copy in paperback....Once you are familiar with the layout of the book, this comes with use, it's a quick easy and accessible book to navigate - 105 pages. The fonts used and diagrams are easy on the eye...In the appendices there are useful analytical tools, these can be adapted and or developed to suit your own schools and pupils needs. This I found useful as primer for whole departmental CPD...Should it be on your shelf or in the briefcase - yes."
