Description

The modern hospital represents a complex community in which life and death decisions are made on the front lines of patient care, and difficult operational and strategic initiatives are developed in the offices of institutional leaders. Effective Medical Leadership describes the unusual position of a medical leader in an organization often administered by non-medical managers.

Through extensive and situational examples in the complex hospital setting, Dr. Bryce Taylor illuminates the principles of leadership, focusing on the challenges, the solutions, and the daily life of the head of a division, department, or program. In hospitals, just as in other large organizations, effective leaders must appreciate the big picture, pay attention to detail, and, above all, care about the careers of their constituents in addition to patient health. Here, Taylor outlines successes as well as failures, emphasizing that leadership, while an imperfect science, is based on common sense, integrity, an orientation to the welfare of colleagues, and a passionate and consistent commitment to the mission of an organization.

'Effective Medical Leadership is an outstanding guide for persons aspiring to leadership positions. In this accessible and up-to-date book, Bryce Taylor shares the wealth of his expertise with wit and humour, successfully addressing the challenges and problems encountered by leaders in the medical field. It should be required reading for all those seeking leadership roles in health care and related professions.' -- Garth Warnock, Chair of Surgery, University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital 'Bryce Taylor presents what today's medical leaders and those who are leaders of the future need-a patient-centred perspective that always takes into account the big-picture needs of the hospital, university, and staff body. Written thoughtfully and in plain language, Taylor's practical guide is a must-read.' -- Philip Hassen, President, International Society for Quality in Health Care, Dublin and President, Canadian Network for International Surgery 'During the course of Bryce Taylor's career, during which time he has been head of a large teaching hospital, he has learned a lot about leadership, confidence, and impartiality. His keen observations in Effective Medical Leadership will be an invaluable resource for anyone new to a position of leadership.' -- Steven Strasberg, Pruett Professor of Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis 'Bryce Taylor, an active academic surgeon and medical leader, brings a lifetime of hands-on leadership experience, acute observation, and a deep understanding of the leadership literature to the task of helping others achieve their own leadership potential.' -- From the foreword by Bruce Barraclough, AO, FRACS, Past President, International Society for Quality in Health Care, and Chair, Clinical Excellence Commission, New South Wales, Australia 'This book has meaning far beyond hospital walls. It is a book about leadership. Anyone responsible for the management of people and resources can learn from Dr. Taylor's unique skills and abilities.' -- David A. Galloway, Chairman of the Board, BMO

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
