Description

The definitive guide to clinical leadership, by Dickon Weir-Hughes, the Chief Executive of the NMC.

Dickon takes a unique slant on the teaching of Leadership and Management through an A-Z format, making this subject very accessible. The book provides a helpful and practical summary of the key leadership principles within healthcare.

Dickon has drawn on his personal experience of the 'sharp end' of clinical leadership in a number of organisations. Utilising his experience as a leadership programme facilitator, mentor and coach. he understands the need for students and practitionners to grasp leadership concepts and terminology, to assess their competence against such a framework and to have some suggestions for taking forward personal development. This book fulfils that in and accessible and novel way.

Practical leadership guidelines from the Chief Executive of the Nursing and Midwifery Council

Reviews

"This book makes the reader question their behaviour and management style. Good leadership is about enabling our staff to develop and flourish and this book gives us guidance on how to do this in an easy to follow format I really enjoyed this book and am sure that I will bring it out on many occasions when faced with leadership issues which will hopefully make me a more effective manager and get me good feedback from my team."
- Journal of Community Nursing

"Nursing and Midwifery Council chief executive and registrar Dickon Weir-Hughes emphasises the need to be real and authentic in your leadership role, while being true to yourself and your values. He argues that this makes for trusted and respected leadership.

He discusses authenticity, truth, values, being real and honest and how these are perceived. This stimulates many 'thinking points', which are highlighted at the end of each alphabetic chapter. Although there are a number of the usual leadership concepts, such as listening, strategy and goals, there are enough surprises to warrant close reading. These include discussion of humanity, excitement, unethical leadership and organisational memory. There is further reading on many of the areas he covers.

Professor Weir-Hughes provides advice at the beginning of the book on how it could be used, with a great deal of emphasis on reflection and reflective practice. This guide would be useful for all leaders, not only those in the health service."
- Hazel Courtney, Nursing Standard

"A useful, supportive guide to leadership across all health care professionals and clinicians, this book is good to use 'as and when you need it' for those who are interested in some of the theory and concepts surrounding leadership and management.

Each chapter opens with a powerful quote relevant to the topic which is discussed in the chapter. The chapters are succinct and straight-to-the point whilst paying attention to certain details. Features include 'Taking Forward' sections at the end of each chapter which aid the reader to implement what has been read and focus on a more practical way to improve leadership and management skills.

[...] definitely worth reading should students or clinicians wish to develop their own practice within a leadership atmosphere and gain a real insight into the 'sharp-end' of clinical leadership."
- Tianna Jarrett-Williams, Nursing Student

"Unlike many books on this topic, it is a practical, easy read that allows the reader to dip in at any point. The 26 short chapters follow an alphabet theme from Authenticity to Zenith... to explain key leadership concepts successfully and concisely."
- Speech and Language Therapy in Practice

"This highly readable and accessible book provides the reader with a very clear and concise overview of the skills and knowledge required for clinical leadership."
- Bulletin of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists

"Professor Weir-Hughes reminds us of the unavoidable truth that good leadership is essential in order for us to provide effective services. Such a reminder from such an authority is reason enough to recommend this book to all those in clinical leadership positions."
- British Journal of Occupational Therapy

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
