Description

The Cleveland Way is one of England's oldest and best-loved National Trails. It runs for 108 miles (174 km) around the North York Moors National Park, starting inland at Helmsley, offering panoramic views over the vales of York and Mowbray and from the Cleveland Hills. After reaching the coast at Saltburn, it heads south along the dramatic sea cliffs, with their tales of shipwrecks and smugglers, to end at Filey.

The route features prehistoric burial mounds, ancient castles, abbeys and Roman remains, with more recent traces of industrial history. Vast areas of heather moorland are host to intriguing wildlife. The Cleveland Way is easily accessible by public transport and is divided into easy stages by villages of character with friendly pubs and accommodation. Above all, the walker is welcomed with warm Yorkshire hospitality.

The second edition of this guidebook contains all you need to plan and enjoy your Cleveland Way walk: updated route descriptions, background on geology, pre-history and history, illustrated information about wildlife, mapping of the entire route on 11 pages at 1:82,500, information about public transport and travel. The book is lavishly illustrated, with 95 colour photos and is printed on rain-resistant paper.

About the Author

The late Gordon Simm was a guidebook author and an award-winning photographer. He lived in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park from the early 1980s until his sudden death in 2012 just after this guidebook was first published. He had been walking parts of the Cleveland Way repeatedly since his first completion in 1989. In 2011 he won the title "Photographer of the Year" in a Panasonic competition and his photos were showcased at the NEC.

Jacquetta Megarry is a professional author who became interested in long-distance walking and trekking, and turned publisher in 2000. After completing the West Highland Way, her first long walk, in 1998, she progressed to Mount Kilimanjaro, which she summited four times by different routes. In 2000 she devised the rainproof Rucksack Reader format with builtin mapping for walking guidebooks. She has since written or co-authored over 20 guidebooks and she updated this one in early 2021.

Reviews

The guide is a testament to excellent research, writing and photography.

-- Malcolm Hodgson * Cleveland Way Trail Manager *

This Rucksack Readers guidebook maintains their high standards. The pages on heritage are good with a fine section on the geology of the area and the iron and alum which were mined in the areas through which the path passes. The illustrations are superb and there are 90 colour photos which means that on completion you can refresh your memory of the walk. I particularly like the section on the History of the Cleveland Way which highlights the work of the pioneers as much of the walk has been used from the early days of leisure walking in England.

In future l will be using this guide when on the Cleveland Way ... because l like this book which has all the information that l need in a compact format which can be easily used on windy days.

-- From an online blog * Bill's Walks. *

I knew Alan Falconer and Bill Cowley, both authors of guides to the Cleveland Way. ... I've visited and written about virtually all the places mentioned in the new guidebook. I am greatly impressed by its facts, figures and presentation of the Cleveland Way.

-- The late W R Mitchell * Editor of The Dalesman *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
