This is a timely book for US decision makers as well as for those interested in China in transition. * Canadian Journal of Political Science *
Sutter's book is valuable and timely. It clarifies many misperceptions in the American policy community of China's rising power and its policy priorities. It also provides a comprehensive examination of recent developments of China's policy in various areas, from economic reform to arms control policy. It serves as a good reference work in China's foreign policy in recent years. * International Affairs *
An excellent report on Chinese foreign policy as of early 1999, with sufficient background to put many current issues into perspective. The background material remains valuable, especially as it is presented in such a clear and balanced fashion. * The China Journal *
Sutter offers a comprehensive review of Chinese domestic and foreign policy priorities and their implications for U.S.-China relations and covers relations with Russia, Japan, the Koreas, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The broad scope makes the book succint on each topic but does not diminish its value-Sutter explores almost every angle on every imaginable issue. He is fair in his treatment of the concerns of China, the U.S., and other countries covered. An excellent review of Chinese foreign policy and its implications for U.S.-China policy. * CHOICE *
