He published his first article in 1982 and in the time since has published thousands of articles and photos in most of the major outdoor and gun magazines. He is a field editor for the NRA's American Rifleman, American Hunter, and Shooting Illustrated magazines. He has published six other hunting or gun-related books and contributed to several others. He also published an action-adventure novel, The 14th Reinstated. Towsley has hunted extensively throughout the United States and Canada, Mexico, Africa, South America, Russia, and Europe for a wide variety of game. He has competed in several shooting disciplines and currently is active in 3-gun shooting and USPSA. Towsley lives in New England.
