Description

The editors have selected a richly varied collection of sacred pieces for this period of the Church's year, always bearing in mind practical considerations and liturgical needs. Pieces are presented in order according to the Church's calendar, moving from Ash Wednesday and Lent, through Passiontide and Palm Sunday, to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Eve, and Easter itself. The best of the standard repertoire is included alongside fine, less familiar, works. Ranging widely from the sixteenth century to the present day, this is a complete and practical collection for church choirs of all sizes and levels of ability.

'I cannot recommend this book too highly.' Guild of Church Musicians Yearbook

About the Author
Lionel Dakers was born in Rochester, Kent, in 1924, and died in 2003. He was Director of the Royal School of Church Music from 1972 until 1989 and enjoyed an international reputation as an ambassador for excellence in church music. He was also for more than 30 years an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music. He was awarded a Lambeth Doctorate in Music in 1979, became a Fellow of the Royal College of Music in 1980 and was appointed CBE in 1983. John Scott was born in 1956 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, where he was a Cathedral chorister. In 1974 he became Organ Scholar at St John's College, Cambridge. On leaving Cambridge, he was appointed Assistant Organist at London's two Anglican Cathedrals, St Paul's and Southwark, eventually becoming Organist and Director of Music at St Paul's in 1990. He is now Director of Music at St Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, and also enjoys an extensive career as an international concert organist. He was appointed a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) in the New Year Honours List 2004. John Scott died in August 2015.

Reviews
Although this book is presented in soft cover, it opens easily for use, and both words and musical notation are very easy to read. Careful editing of early scores (e.g. 16th century music) enables modern choirs to tackle the performance of this repertoire with ease, while grouping the pieces of music according to the day, or season, enables the choir director to easily find suitable music for a specific occasion - a great timesaver! * Organ News (NZ), May 99 *
This is an exciting and superbly presented new collection of pieces suitable, as the title implies, for use from Ash Wednesday until Easter Day, but many are usable on other occasions, particularly at Sung Eucharists . . . I cannot recommend this book too highly. * John Ewington, Guild of Church Musicians 1999 Yearbook *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
