Addressing the growing need for innovation and automation in library cataloguing systems, this cutting-edge book teaches readers how to build AI-powered cataloguing apps using Microsoft Power Apps.

This authoritative guide provides a step-by-step approach to how cataloguing processes can be modernised by using artificial intelligence, featuring a major retrocataloguing project as the primary case study. Focusing on creating inclusive bibliographic records, this book will enable readers to train AI models, develop tools to improve efficiency and collection management and address challenges such as uncatalogued collections and the demand for more accessible, enriched metadata. Chapters include:

  • An introduction to cataloguing and metadata
  • Getting started with the Power Platform ecosystem
  • Integrating artificial intelligence
  • Building, deploying and maintaining the cataloguing app

With a focus on practical applications and user-friendly methodologies, this transformative book provides librarians, information professionals and data managers with an accessible guide to building their own automated cataloguing systems.

About the Author

Hannes Lowagie joined the Royal Library of Belgium in 2012 and was appointed head of the cataloguing department in 2022. A key aspect of his role has been the development of a retrocataloging application, which is designed to streamline the process of digitising older bibliographic records. He is currently in the process of adapting this application for use with contemporary publications that enter KBR through legal deposit, ensuring that both historical and modern collections are catalogued efficiently and with the most up-to-date tools available.

Reviews

AI-Powered Cataloguing is a timely and highly practical resource that bridges the gap between traditional cataloguing and emerging AI-powered workflows across library environments. Hannes Lowagie brings both technical expertise and a deep understanding of bibliographic applications. A must-read for library professionals exploring real-world automation in an AI-driven world.

-- Dr. Michalis Gerolimos, Deputy Head of Cataloging, National Library of Greece

As well as being a usefully practical guide to creating an online tool for cataloguing, Hannes' book is an excellent primer for anyone interested in thinking about the future of cataloguing. His comprehensive text invites us all to improve our workflows and update our understanding of the potential for our metadata creation.

-- Jenny Wright, Chief Metadata Officer, Bibliographic Data Services

Hannes Lowagie boldly confronts the controversial and often misunderstood field of AI-based bibliographic cataloguing, showcasing the design and real-world outcomes of a pioneering implementation. At a time when much of the discourse remains speculative or abstract, this book delivers much-needed clarity, substance, and direction. It not only illuminates technical possibilities but also redefines the evolving role of the cataloguer, urging readers to rethink the profession as a space for reinvention, not replacement.

-- Roberto Gomez, Head of Bibliographic Standards Office, National Library of Spain

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
