Description

Academic Labor beyond the College Classroom initiates a scholarly and professional conversation, calling upon faculty to participate in, reimagine, and transform their institutional and professional work to look beyond just teaching and research. Chapters in this contributed volume offer case studies, strategies, and exemplars of how faculty can re-engage in institutional service, mentoring, governance, and administrative duties to advance equity efforts at all levels of the university, calling for what Dr. Nancy Chick names in the Foreword as a "scholarship of influence." This book draws from a diverse range of methodologies and disciplines, issuing an invitation to faculty "across the divide" of their specific college, school, or corner of the university into cross-conversations and partnerships for positive change.

Reviews

"What this book illustrates is that we need not-and should not-look to others to make it right, to make a difference. The chapters that follow evidence the many ways in which rank-and-file faculty have drawn on their expertise, their colleagues as partners, their concern for the institution, and their values rooted in equity to make a difference."
From the Foreword by Nancy L. Chick, Director, Endeavor Center for Faculty Development, Rollins College

"Academic Labor beyond the College Classroom calls for fundamental change in higher education. While some of the chapters describe instances of institutional reorganization, it's pretty clear that physical change of that sort is no more than moving around the deck chairs, as higher education-and our values as members of the academic community-hurtle toward the iceberg. The essential moves called for in this book are deep changes in teaching, learning, and in the very definition of academic work, necessitated by new ways of knowing."
From the Afterword by Elaine P. Maimon, Ph.D., President, Governors State University

"This book might be most inspirational as a guide to slow but useful tactics for increasing equity in academia. Social change makers and coalition builders within the university might find help here in thinking about ways to make change within their spheres. The authors also address groups that are historically left out, including un>documented students and workers, women, and transgender students."
-Nicole Braun, RGWS: A Feminist Review

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
