Description

Mario Algaze is one of the premier contemporary fine art photographers of Latin America and A Respect for Light is the first retrospective of his work. With a foreword by celebrated photography critic Vince Aletti. A Respect for Light will be on exhibition at History Miami Museum (November 2014-January 25, 2015), and will be promoted during at Art Basel, Miami, in December 2014. A Respect for Light showcases the unique genius of Latin American photographer (by birth and subject matter) Mario Algaze, whose deep appreciation and understanding of the nuances of light - sunlight pouring in through church windows, illuminating a pair of teacups on a cafe table, casting late-afternoon shadows on a cobblestoned street - is both legendary and rare. This compilation is an exquisite and comprehensive collection of work by the Cuban-American photographer who, after being exiled from his homeland at the age of thirteen, travelled extensively in Central and South America, capturing the spirit of Latin America through his lens and seeking a connection with his cultural roots. This book represents the full breadth of the artist's work, culled from over three decades of travel in sixteen different countries. As Carol McCusker, Curator of Photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) in San Diego, writes, Algaze "has steadily built a sum view of Spanish-speaking countries that no other photographer has done before or since."

About the Author
Born in Cuba in 1947, Mario Algaze moved to Miami with his family at the age of thirteen, one year after the Cuban Revolution. In 1971, at the age of 24, Algaze began his career as a self-taught photographer. He has travelled extensively in Central and South America, photographing sixteen Latin American countries, reflecting on his exile and exploring his Latin American roots. Algaze has received fellowships from The Florida Arts Council, the United Nations, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been featured in over fifty solo and group exhibitions across the United States and has been collected by such institutions as the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, among many others. When Algaze is not travelling, he resides in Miami with his wife. Vince Aletti is one of the foremost photography critics of our time. He has spent the last forty years writing, curating, and reporting on culture. He regularly reviews photography exhibitions for The New Yorker and photography books for Photograph magazine. He is a regular contributor to Aperture, Artforum and W. Aletti was the art editor of the Village Voice from 1994 to 2005 and the paper's photography critic for twenty years. In 2005, he won the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award for writing. He lives in New York City.

Reviews
His images are in the tradition of South American modernism, beautifully composed, respectful of persons, with great attention paid to texture and, as the title of the show implies, light.--William Meyers "Wall Street Journal, 5/01/2015 "

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
