Description

The latest Yorkshire volume provides an authoritative and comprehensive account of an important area centred upon Sledmere. This volume covers seven parishes and some sixteen ancient settlements on the eastern dip-slope of the Yorkshire Wolds. Its rich and varied past extends from the important Iron Age settlements with their well-known chariot burialsto the great estate - at its high point one of the largest in England - built up by the Sykes family in the 18th and 19th centuries and centred upon the village of Sledmere. The volume includes a substantial introduction coveringthe history and archaeology of the area as a whole and analysing the impact of the Sledmere estate on local villages, churches and farmsteads. There are also detailed sections on the landscape and topography, economic, social andreligious history of the parishes and their settlements. The villages covered by the volume are Cowlam, Duggleby, Fimber, Fridaythorpe, Helperthorpe, Kirby Grindalythe, East and West Lutton, Sledmere, Weaverthorpe and Wetwang. DAVID and SUSAN NEAVE are former staff of the University of Hull.
Reviews
Overall, both these volumes form invaluable additions to the history of their respective counties. They are authoritative and thoroughly researched, providing- as they are meant to do- the key works of reference for local history. -- Jon Stobart (joint review with VCH Sussex V, part 2) * ECONOMIC HISTORY REVIEW *
The Victoria County History continues to earn the gratitude of landscape - and many other - historians by producing such excellent volumes as this. [...] This is a splendid volume, more than matching the high standards of its predecessors. It is thorough, scholarly, and impeccably indexed and referenced, while also engagingly written, alive, for instance, to the evidence of literature as well as documents, maps and the landscape. * LANDSCAPE HISTORY *
A model of what a VCH volume should be. * NORTHERN HISTORY *
An important addition to the existing corpus of work on the historic East Riding. [It] will surely prove itself useful not only to academics, but also to the legion of local, family and community historians in the county. * AGRICULTURAL HISTORY REVIEW *
Many of the essays will be useful to scholars of the period and its texts. * THE YEAR'S WORK IN ENGLISH STUDIES *
A very readable book. * THE LOCAL HISTORIAN *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
