Trade unions in Europe are currently facing a series of challenges that stem from changes to regulatory and production regimes implemented by the state and employers, in order to compete in an increasingly internationalized economy. About the Author

Jeremy Waddington is Professor of Industrial Relations in the People, Management and Organisation Divisions of the University of Manchester, and is the Project Co-ordinator for the European Trade Union Institute, Brussels.
Marcus Kahmann is a PhD student in political sciences supported by the Hans-Boeckler Stiftung, and has recently completed a diploma in sociology at the University of Paris.
Jurgen Hoffmann is Professor of Political Sociology at the Hamburg University for Economics and Politics.
