Description

A travel memoir of the funny, ridiculous and sometimes alarming events the author experienced while working as a psychologist in the United Nations system and as a woman traveling alone to several hot-spots around the world, as diverse as Haiti, Pakistan, Darfur, Liberia, Madagascar and Syria. Her stories of the aid workers she encounters in the far-flung places and the challenging contexts she travels to provide a rare insight into the hidden world of humanitarian aid, highlighting aspects of the dysfunctionality of the United Nations, especially in the ways in which it has fallen short in its protection of its employees. As her narrative unfolds it also reveals the impact that this work has on her own life, balancing the roles of aid worker with those of wife and mother, and the toll that it takes. The background of her childhood in South Africa and growing awareness of the evil of the apartheid regime provides the context to her involvement in this work, and offers an enlightening glimpse into the life of a young white woman growing up under apartheid during the 1960s and 1970s. She also describes meeting and falling in love with a handsome, younger man while working in Albania, and how their love story thrives, against all odds.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
