Description

Mediaeval no-go zone, Victorian hell-hole, war-ravaged bomb site, 21st century shining city, the most exciting area in one of the most exciting cities in the world - the East End has often been London's strange alter ego. Ed Glinert trawls through the strange stories, the crazed characters, the violent vignettes, the dried-up docks, the imaginative immigrants, the proud philanthropists to give a different history of the most misunderstood sector of the capital, from the Princes in the Tower to the Ratcliffe Highway murders; from Jack the Ripper to the Kray twins; the Jewish ghetto to Banglatown; Cable Street to Canary Wharf; Mahatma Gandhi to George Orwell.

About the Author

Ed Glinert was born in Dalston, just outside London's East End. He trained as a journalist and founded City Life, Manchester's what's-on and hard news magazine in 1983. In the 1990s he worked for Private Eye magazine, writing the Rotten Boroughs column about council corruption. He has also contributed to the Sunday Times, Independent and the New Statesman. He was launch production editor for Mojo, the rock 'n' roll magazine. Glinert has written a number of books for major publishers including The London Compendium (2003) and East End Chronicles (2005). Since 2009 he has run the highly-successful New Manchester Walks tour company. He also guides in London and Liverpool. Marc Zakian is a writer and photographer whose work has appeared in newspapers and magazines across the world. His travel writing has appeared in The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Times and The Evening Standard, as well as Conde Nast Traveller and Wizz Magazine. He has written and contributed images for several guide books, including the Insight guides to southern Italy and Rome. He edits and photographs The Guide magazine, a national publication produced by the British Guild of Tourist Guides. Marc is also a London Blue Badge Guide leading both history and photography tours.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
