Description

"Imagine you were cast adrift on a desert island with a school full of children in desperate need of a great headteacher. What eight qualities would you take with you to run your desert island school?"

In this inspirational book, some of the UK's most successful headteachers answer this question, talking openly about what it takes to effectively manage a school today. In candid and moving accounts we hear how they have both turned around failing schools and improved outstanding schools. Their thoughts, from vision, to courage and resilience, form the 8 key qualities which are examined in depth through the book.

This is not a book about government-led initiatives, top-down models or politically-motivated attempts to change the way schools are managed. Instead, it focuses on the vital leadership ingredients that successful heads say work for them. It offers essential insights and advice into the challenges of running a school successfully and will be a source of inspiration for all school leaders and anyone thinking about moving into headship.

This book examines the key qualities shared by the most successful head teachers. It is a must-read for school leaders and anyone aspiring to headship.

Reviews
This is not the first book on school leadership but it does approach it in a non prescriptive and engaging way. Jeremy Sutcliffe draws on the views and practices of some outstanding school leaders and gives a very rooted insight into what has made their schools successful. It will interest anyone who aspires to leadership or who wants to know more about good school practice. * Estelle Morris, former Secretary of State for Education *
Jeremy Sutcliffe has provided an intelligent commentary on education for many years now and it is great to see his insight brought to bear on successful school leadership in this timely book. * Sir Michael Barber, Chief Education Advisor, Pearson. *

This is a careful and inspirational study of headship which celebrates the differences in some of our most successful Headteachers yet finds common patterns in their beliefs and behaviours.

At its heart this book should give readers the confidence that if you want to be a great Head or senior leader, you have to find your own style and stay true to your value

* Paul K. Ainsworth, Head of an 11-16 school and author of 'Get that Teaching Job' and 'Developing a self-evaluating school' *
Sutcliffe has the keen eyes of a skilled journalist and the instincts of a researcher. He has long been fascinated by schools and writes here persuasively and with deep insight about the qualities which combine to make outstanding school leaders and which he has gleaned from long conversations with outstanding heads. A great read for anyone with ambitions to lead or improve their leadership. * Tim Brighouse, formerly London Schools Commissioner and Chief Education Officer in Oxfordshire and Birmingham *
a fascinating collection of ideas, research and anecdotes...presented in a way that is as accessible as it is inspiring...for teachers at any stage in their career * Teach Secondary *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
